Question was about population density

July 02, 2004 Edition 1

I have looked at Programme 11 (which was broadcast on June 16), and I could not find any question with the phrasing Mr Sol Makgabutlane writes about in his Little Spot (June 22).

I think the question he refers to is: In geography, which South African province is the most densely populated?

Answer: Gauteng.

The question was about the concept of population density (ie population per square kilometre). Gauteng has an area of 17 010 sq km, with a population of 8 837 178, giving it a density of 519,5 people per sq km.

KwaZulu Natal has a population of 9 426 017, but an area of 92 100 sq km, giving it a population density of 102,35 people per sq km.

According to the Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia: Gauteng is the smallest of the South African provinces, but has the highest population density.

The official South African Yearbook, which is reproduced on the government website, states: Gauteng is the most densely populated province in SA. It houses almost 9-million of the country's people.
