The ashes of St Lucia fisherman Neville Elder will be scattered at the spot where he was killed by a crocodile this week.
Conservation authorities said the 75-year-old's remains, which were found on Tuesday, were being kept in the Mtubatuba mortuary and would be taken to Eshowe for cremation.
His stepson, Floyd Caldwell, said the ashes would be
scattered where Elder had set up camp along the estuary mouth. Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park Authority confirmed this.
This would be done in a private memorial ceremony.
Roland Vorwerk of the Park Authority in St Lucia and Maureen Zimu of EKZN Wildlife's head office confirmed that the crocodile suspected of attacking Elder on Monday was shot the next night.
"The large male crocodile, which is normally very visible in this part of the estuary mouth, has not been seen all day," they said.
Conservation staff searched the shoreline and water yesterday to find any further remains of Elder or the crocodile.
Staff had reported seeing 11 other large crocs in the area of "at least 4m in length". - Staff Reporter
