Chief of waste institute steps down

December 01, 2009 Edition 2

Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWMSA) president Vincent Charnley has stepped down until a probe into the illegal dumping of raw medical waste in Welkom is completed.

This came yesterday after the Green Scorpions found tons of raw medical waste dumped in and around Welkom during several raids.

Charnley was implicated in the recent medical waste investigation, the IWMSA said.

"Wasteman Group, a patron member of the IWMSA, is also under investigation. It has also been suspended until the investigation has been concluded. This is in line with IWMSA policies and code of ethics," the institute said. - Sapa
