Mali to meet interim ASA board

Athletics South Africa's (ASA) interim board will meet with the federation's administrator, Ray Mali, for the first time today. The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) met with ASA's provincial members last Saturday to form the nine-member interim board after the Olympic body had suspended ASA executives and senior staff for their handling of the Caster Semenya gender affair. Sascoc board member Mali said last weekend he and his task team would work with the interim board to mend various problems in ASA, including reported financial mismanagement.

Sauber to buy BMW F1 team

German car maker BMW have agreed to sell their Formula One team to previous owner Peter Sauber, provided the team get a place on the grid next season. BMW announced in July they would pull out of Formula One at the end of the season, citing the global economic downturn. They said yesterday a previous agreement to sell to Qadbak Investments has been annulled.

Martins blow for German champs

Bundesliga champions VfL Wolfsburg will be without Obafemi Martins for the rest of the year as the Nigeria forward is nursing a shinbone injury. Wolfsburg said yesterday Martins would undergo an operation next week and will not return until after the winter break. "He can't stand the pain any more. We must do something now," said coach Armin Veh.

Amajita tune up with friendlies

The SA Under-20 side, Amajita, are in camp to round off preparations for the 2009 Cosafa Under-20 Youth Championship, scheduled for Johannesburg from December 4-15. Amajita are in Swaziland for an international friendly tomorrow. They will then move to neighbouring Lesotho and will play Lesotho on Thursday.

Force India retain German, Italian

The Force India Formula One team named Germany's Adrian Sutil and Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi yesterday in a 2010 line-up unchanged from the one that finished the season. "We are very pleased to retain the services of both Adrian and Tonio for another season," said team owner Vijay Mallya.

Austria loses ancient tournament

The Austrian Open, a 65-year-old claycourt tournament, has been dropped from the ATP World Tour calendar after a legal dispute with local authorities over the tennis stadium in Kitzbuehel. The ATP said yesterday the tournament rights had now been moved to Nice, France, for at least the next five seasons. According to tournament director Ronnie Leitgeb, the local city council refused to sign an agreement on the terms of use of the stadium.

'Our drugs were next to the veggies'

Tim Montgomery started taking performance-enhancing drugs because he wanted to beat American sprint rival Maurice Greene and become the fastest man in the world, the former 100m world record holder said in an interview with a British newspaper. Montgomery, who also said he and former partner Marion Jones stored their steroids in the refrigerator "next to the vegetables", spoke to The Times from a prison in Alabama where he is serving time for bank fraud and drug dealing.

Group to sue 'racist' Juve fans
