Downs hit in the pocket for late arrival

Mamelodi Sundowns were fined R50 000 for arriving late for their Absa Premiership match against Moroka Swallows on November 4. Sundowns have to pay R20 000 and the costs of the sitting, while the R30 000 is suspended on condition that the club is not found guilty of a similar offence in the next 12 months. Jomo Cosmos and Platinum Stars coach Steve Komphela had their respective cases postponed to December 8.

Ban Juvetuns doctors - anti doping boss

Juventus doctors Bartolomeo Goitre and Luca Stefanini should face three-month bans for their mishandling of Fabio Cannavaro's treatment for a wasp sting, Italy's anti-doping chief said in a statement yesterday. Cannavaro had previously been cleared of wrongdoing after failing a drugs test in August, two days after receiving an emergency cortisone injection for the sting. However, Juve's doctors have been charged because of a mix-up over documentation and a tribunal will now decide whether to uphold the anti-doping chief's request for a ban.

Comrades entries reopened

After an overwhelming response from previous runners and novices alike, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) will reopen entries for 2 000 additional entries only. The original 20 000 spaces for the 2010 Comrades Marathon were snapped up in record time and since the close of entries earlier this month, the CMA has been inundated with requests from runners to reopen entries. Entries will open on January 30th at 9am and will only be accepted at Mr Price Clothing, Sport and Home Stores countrywide. Entries will close as soon as 2 000 applications have been received. This is the final entry intake and no further opportunities will be created after this period.

Italy captain struck down by injury

Italy captain Sergio Parisse suffered a serious knee ligament injury yesterday and could be missing for up to six months, which would rule him out of February's Six Nations Championship. The No8 was earlier named in the team for tomorrow's final November Test against Samoa, but his place will now be taken by Josh Sole, the Italian federation said.

Everton's new stadium plan shot down

Everton's planned move to a new stadium on the outskirts of the city of Liverpool has been rejected by the British government, the club said yesterday. Everton were part of a proposed £400-million development to include a 50 000-capacity ground and a shopping complex in Kirkby. Britain's communities and local government secretary John Denham rejected the plan after a public inquiry, on the grounds that it breached government policy which discourages major supermarket chains from taking business away from town and city centres.

China's clampdown on match-fixing

Chinese police have announced the arrest of up to 16 former players, along with club and league officials, as part of a widening probe into rampant match-fixing in the country's professional football league. News of the arrests, announced by the Ministry of Public Security, was a top story in newspapers and websites yesterday, with reports focussing on the lurid details of how money was exchanged to fix the outcome of games.

Romario helps late dad's favourite team

Former Brazil striker Romario came out of retirement to play 22 minutes for his late father's favourite team America-RJ and lift the Rio de Janeiro state second division title on Wednesday. The 43-year-old Romario, who retired in 2008 and became America's sporting director this year, came on as a substitute in the second half of America's 2-0 win over Artsul. The former Barcelona striker was unable to improve on his career goals tally, which he has claimed to be over 1000, but he did a lap of honour with the trophy. - Sapa-AFP/AP/Reuters
