West Rand drug cops granted bail
The three senior West Rand police officers facing drug-smuggling charges in the High Court in Joburg were granted bail yesterday.
Senior Superintendent Dumisani Jwara, Inspector Victor Jwili and Captain Landro Mokgosani face 13 charges that include drug dealing, fraud, racketeering and defeating the ends of justice. Their trial will resume on April 12.
Suspect held in aviator's murder
A man has been arrested for the murder of an 89-year-old man, who was a former World War II pilot, Pretoria police said.
Frans Swemmer was found dead in his Monument Park home yesterday morning.
The suspect, who was found sitting in Swemmer's car, was arrested in Hammanskraal yesterday afternoon.
Trainee fatally shoots corporal
An SANDF corporal has died after being accidentally shot during a training exercise in Oudtshoorn, the Ministry of Defence said yesterday.
The accident happened on Thursday during a crowd control exercise when a trainee shot Corporal Tuis Dimakatso Malitisi, 36, of Regiment Christiaan Beyers in Polokwane. He died in hospital.
Pleas bargain for credit card swindler
A member of a credit card scam syndicate will spend an effective four years in jail under a plea bargain reached in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crime Court yesterday.
Yusuf Ismail, 41, was arrested while making a fraudulent credit card purchase at the Bayside outlet of Incredible Connection.
PAC denies faction's convention claim
The "national convention" summoned by a PAC faction was not a PAC event, a party spokesman said yesterday.
On Thursday it was announced that a "third PAC national convention" would take place in Cape Town at the end of this month.
First summer circumcision death
As the Eastern Cape recorded its first death of the summer circumcision season, the province's Health Department yesterday urged parents to play a stronger role in protecting their sons' welfare.
The 19-year-old youth died of dehydration last week at an initiation school in the Butterworth area of Transkei. Last month, following 55 deaths in the winter season, the department and traditional leaders held a summit on circumcision in Mthatha. - All briefs by Sapa
