Nedbank branch in Sandton robbed
Three armed men yesterday robbed a Nedbank branch at the Benmore Gardens shopping centre of an undisclosed amount of money, Joburg police said. "The three held up security, staff and management at 10am. They demanded money from the tellers and fled," Inspector Lee Ramdiyal said. No shots were fired and the men fled on foot. - Sapa
Hijacked policewoman found dead
A 33-year-old Eastern Cape policewoman was murdered after four men hijacked her car near Grahamstown, Port Alfred police said yesterday. Captain Mali Govender said Chunyiswa Zamani - stationed at King William's Town - had been driving in the direction of Peddie just after noon on Wednesday when she was hijacked in her blue VW Jetta. The vehicle was found later about 30km from Grahamstown. Zamani's body was found nearby. She had been shot a number of times. - Sapa
Restaurant manager fleeced R1.4m
Blue Crane restaurant manager Charl Bester was yesterday convicted of 820 counts of fraud involving more than R1 million, the National Prosecuting Authority said. "Bester allegedly managed to misappropriate R1 475 023.18 by transferring money which was due to service providers into his personal bank account," the NPA said in a statement. Bester, who is out on bail of R5 000, will be sentenced on March 5. - Sapa
Mokonyane on the warpath
Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane yesterday criticised a lack of service delivery and wastage in the province. She said half the province's R58 billion budget was geared towards services such as education and health. "What are we getting?" she asked, then answered: "Long queues, people sleeping under trees, misdiagnosis, teachers missing class." Mokonyane said services had to be delivered efficiently, and more accountability had to be expected. - Sapa
Five nabbed for fake licences
Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele yesterday welcomed the arrest of three men and two women believed to be part of a syndicate that sold fake learner's and driver's licences in Bloemfontein. More arrests can be expected in the next few days, he said in a statement. Police arrested the five people in raids on Tuesday and Wednesday. - Sapa
China targets Buthelezi over Tibet
IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi will attend a summit of world leaders on China's rule of Tibet in Rome later this month in spite of Chinese pressure, his assistant, Thamsanqa Duma, said yesterday. The Ilanga newspaper reported yesterday that China's consul-general, Liu Yantao, recently wrote a letter to Buthelezi asking him not to take part in the summit. Attempts to persuade the South African government to block Buthelezi also failed. Yantao refused to comment yesterday. - Sapa
Initiate dies after circumcision
An initiate has died in Butterworth, apparently from lack of water, Eastern Cape police said yesterday. Captain Jackson Manatha said the 19-year-old Sonke Foca "is alleged to have dehydrated in his traditional hut on Wednesday. It is alleged that the deceased was circumcised by a professional traditional doctor on Saturday." - Sapa
Man held over cocaine worth R1.8m
A man was arrested when cocaine worth an estimated R1.8 million on the street was found in his possession yesterday, Pretoria police said. Captain Lucas Sithole said a Mamelodi task team arrested the 36-year-old man in the early hours of the morning at a townhouse in Karen Park, north of Pretoria.
