Iceberg spotted in warm waters

November 12, 2009 Edition 4

SYDNEY: A large iceberg was spotted off an island halfway between Antarctica and Australia, a rare sight in waters so far north, Australian scientists said today.

Australian Antarctic Division researchers working on Macquarie Island, 1 500km south-east of Tasmania, first saw the iceberg last Thursday about 8km off the north-west coast of the island.

The iceberg, 50m high and 500m long, may be one of several larger icebergs that broke off Antarctica's Ross Ice Shelf between 2000 and 2002.

Icebergs have drifted towards the island over the past year, but usually not so far into warmer northern waters.

The scientists believe the iceberg will break up and melt rapidly as it continues its journey north. - Sapa-AP
