Commonwealth to discuss Fiji
December 08, 2006 Edition 1
LONDON: The Commonwealth will meet in London today to discuss whether to suspend Fiji's membership of the organisation after the military takeover in the Pacific nation earlier this week.
The grouping's secretary-general Don McKinnon told reporters on Tuesday that the "likelihood of Fiji being suspended is very high", with foreign ministers from nine Commonwealth nations due to discuss the situation in the former British colony.
Foreign ministers from Canada, Britain, Lesotho, Tanzania, Papua New Guinea, St Lucia, Malta, Malaysia and Sri Lanka will meet in the Commonwealth Secretariat here to consider suspension and other action against Fiji.
A Commonwealth spokeswoman said earlier this week that the ministers could suspend Fiji's participation in top meetings, such as those of ministers, heads of state and of government. - Sapa-AFP
