The quick action of Netcare911 Paramedics and the skill and expertise of Prince M'shiyeni Memorial Hospital surgeons and nursing staff saved the life of a Mid Illovo man who had been stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle in the early hours of Thursday morning, according to Netcare911.
It is thought that the man had been injured in a brawl and in the fracas he sustained a deep laceration to his neck. The cut severed major blood vessels and when Netcare911 Paramedics arrived they found the man in a pool of blood on the back of a bakkie.
Paramedics sprung to action and began treating the man. He was rushed to the Netcare Kingsway hospital for stabilisation and thereafter transported to the Umlazi hospital for further treatment.
Surgeons operated on the man and managed to reconstruct the affected vascular system.
He remains in a critical condition.
